Atheist group orders Unicoi County Board of Education to remove Christian flag

UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – A group that advocates for the separation of church and state is asking the Unicoi County Board of Education to remove the Christian flag from its public meetings. According to a news release, The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to the Board of Education requesting the removal. FFRF Staff Attorney Rebecca Markert wrote in the letter that displaying the flag is a “brazen affront to the Establishment Clause of the United State Constitution.” Markert continued to write, “Courts have continually held that school districts may not display religious messages of iconography in public schools. A majority of federal courts have held displays of Latin crosses on public property to be an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.”
