SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — Joey Hobbs, 11, and his aunt Ashley Sand are operating in high gear to collect donations for homeless veterans and care packages for troops stationed overseas.

Joey and his best friend Levi Thomas were in the Shelbyville Walmart Friday to collect donations. Sand had planned to be present but was called in to work at the last minute. “It’s killing me not to be there,” Sand said.

Joey and Levi also were asking people to sign flags that say, “We Support Our Troops.” The flags will be shipped to the troops overseas, they said.

Walmart’s customer service desk will accept donated items until Nov. 13. They have a complete list of suggested care package items. The items will be shipped out starting Nov. 14. The donations are going to soldiers in Afghanistan and to Operation Stand Down in Nashville, which works with homeless veterans.
