Medicated and mighty: Selfie helps many facing mental health issues

When Middle Tennessee mother of four Erin Jones Roberts posted a selfie to Facebook, she had no idea she would become a viral sensation, she told the Times-Gazette. The selfie Jones took wasn’t just to share her beautifully colored blue and pink mermaid hair, it was of Jones holding two prescriptions for her anxiety and depression.

“This is it people,” Jones wrote. “Two prescriptions to maintain this crazy. Wish me luck.”

Jones’ humor in her situation, paired with her raw honesty, sent the image around the Internet overnight. Soon millions of women across the nation began uploading their own selfies and using the hashtag #medicatedandmighty in an effort to destigmatize mental health issues.

Jones suffers from depression and anxiety, and remained prescription-free for over a decade, but recent health events became a catalyst that sent her to the doctor looking for help.
