TN county clerk stops performing marriages

Bedford County Clerk Donna Thomas said Tuesday she stopped performing civil marriage ceremonies all the way back in February — simply because it was taking too much time and doesn’t generate revenue for the county, not because of any reason related to this summer’s Supreme Court decision, the Shelbyville Times-Gazette reports.

The county clerk’s office issues marriage licenses. County clerks are allowed to perform marriage ceremonies but aren’t required to. She said now, if couples are interested in a civil ceremony, the clerk’s office simply provides them with a short list of officials who are routinely willing to provide that service.
