NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – A crowd of 400 gathered at Legislative Plaza on Thursday for a “Religious Freedom Rally.”
There were some nationally known names there, as well as two lawmakers who will offer a bill to render the recent Supreme Court decision for same-sex marriage null and void. Rally leaders say the bill is evidence of their pledge to engage Tennesseans in a number of issues, from defending the religious freedom of Christians to fighting back against what they call an unworkable immigration system.
The bill is called the Tennessee Natural Marriage Defense Act, which states, in part: “The historical institution and legal contract solemnizing the relationship of one man and one woman shall be the only legally recognized marital contract in this state. Any court decision purporting to strike down natural marriage is unauthoritative, void, and of no effect. Natural marriage as one between one (1) man and one (1) woman as recognized by the people of Tennessee remains the law in Tennessee, regardless of any court decision to the contrary.”
