(WKRN) – State Rep. Rick Womick (R), of Rutherford County, is ready to introduce legislation, if need be, to stop marriage licenses from being issued across the state, all because of the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage.
“If we don’t stand up and say no to these five Supreme Court Justices, we no longer have a constitutional republic; we are an oligarchy,” Womick said.
“If you don’t want to uphold our sovereignty, then let’s just go ahead and get out of the marriage business and no longer issue marriage certificates,” Womick said. “We won’t issue any marriage license to anybody.”
Womick said the state constitution backs him.
“Under no circumstance will any law, public policy or judicial interpretation propitiating that marriage is anything other than one man and one woman will be enforceable in Tennessee,” he said. “It will be void, and that’s verbatim out of the Constitution.”
Womick sent a letter to elected county clerks across the state asking them not to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.
“There is no federal law that you would be violating by not upholding the court’s opinion, it’s strictly an opinion,” he said.
